Method and example

Words are counted as groups of letters or numbers, including internal apostrophes, underscores and hyphens. Characters count Unicode code points, while the sentence count uses punctuation as an estimate.

The built-in example “Small tools. Big ideas.” contains four words. Reading time uses 200 words per minute and rounds up to at least one minute.

Before you use the result

• A university portal or word processor may use different tokenization rules. Compare the same text when a submission limit is strict.
• Remove material that should not count, such as a reference list, before pasting if your assignment policy excludes it.
