PRACTICAL GUIDE

Get better English and Urdu OCR results

Prepare a readable photo and check recognition errors before using extracted text.

OCR estimates characters from image pixels. It is useful for copying a printed paragraph, but it does not know whether a recognized name, date or account number is correct. A plausible-looking result can still contain an important mistake. Always compare the output with the source.

Prepare the source image

Use a sharp, upright image with the whole text block visible. A close photograph of one paragraph often works better than a distant photograph of a whole board. Avoid glare, shadows, curved book pages and screenshots that have already been heavily compressed. If the page is tilted, straighten the photograph first. Do not apply an extreme black-and-white filter if it erases punctuation or thin letter strokes.

Choose the appropriate language

Choose English for an English page and Urdu for an Urdu page. For a genuinely mixed page, choose English + Urdu. Loading both languages can take longer and does not automatically improve a page written in only one language. The first run may take extra time while the locally hosted engine and language files load. Keep the tab open until processing finishes.

Use a line-by-line checking method

  1. Keep the original image visible beside the extracted text.
  2. Check headings and proper names first; unusual words receive less reliable guesses.
  3. Compare every number, decimal point, date, minus sign and unit.
  4. Check punctuation and missing spaces. English OCR can confuse 0 with O, 1 with I or l, and rn with m.
  5. On Urdu pages, check joined letters, dots, word spacing and the position of numbers. Mixed right-to-left and left-to-right text may require manual rearrangement.

A recognition result such as “10.0” instead of “100” illustrates why confidence in the wording should not replace source checking. Do not paste unreviewed OCR into an application, assignment quotation or payment instruction. Handwriting, decorative fonts and damaged scans can require transcription by a person.

Image OCR and searchable PDFs are different

Image to text / OCR returns text from one image. OCR PDF rebuilds up to five PDF pages and adds an approximate English text layer over page images. It is intended to help searching and selecting text, not to recreate the original document's editable layout. Existing forms, links and signatures do not survive that rebuild.

The website does not send selected images to an external OCR service. Processing runs on your device, but you should still avoid working on sensitive documents on a shared computer. Copy or download a checked result before leaving the tool; its current text is not a permanent account record.
